Face Wiki

From Maya Shenxiang to Bingjian,
the core framework of 2,000 years of face reading.

01

What is face reading?

Not about looks,
about aura.

Face reading is a branch of Chinese traditional arts. Its core idea is that facial features, complexion, and demeanor are external expressions of one's character, experience, and state.

Unlike Western astrology or tarot, face reading originates from"observing and understanding people"— essentially an experience-based method of character assessment.

Ancient face reading split into two schools:

JIANG HU

Jianghu School

Practical focus. Key works: Maya Shenxiang, Liuzhuang Xiangfa, Shenxiang Quanbian

XUE SHI

Scholar School

Theoretical focus. Key works: Liu Shao's Renwuzhi, Zeng Guofan's Bingjian

"Form is lesser than Spirit,"
"Spirit is lesser than Qi."

— Zeng Guofan · Bingjian · Spirit & Bone

Three Stops is the most basic vertical division in face reading: the face is divided into three sections, each corresponding to a life phase.

Middle

Midlife · Ages 30–50

Brow → Nose base

Governs Career, wealth, health

Lower

Later years · Ages 50+

Nose base → Chin

Governs Family, children, twilight

"Long upper stop brings youth fortune; Long middle stop brings prosperity; Long lower stop brings peaceful old age."

— Maya Shenxiang · Three Stops
